Aggregation of [Ln(12)(III)] clusters by the dianion of 3-formylsalicylic acid. Synthesis, crystal structures, magnetic and luminescence properties
2019
Three isostrucutral dodecanuclear clusters with the general formula [Ln(12)(fsa)(12)(mu f(3)-OH)(12)(DMF)(12)]center dot nDMF (fsa(2-) is the dianion of 3-formylsalicylic acid; Ln = Eu 1, Gd 2, Dy 3) have been obtained from the reaction of fromylsalicyclic acid (H(2)fsa), tetrabutylammonium hydroxide and Ln(NO3)(3)center dot 6H(2)O in methanol/DMF. Their structure consists of four vertex-sharing heterocubanes. Each heterocubane unit is assembled from four Ln(III) ions, three mu(3)-OH groups and one mu(3)-oxygen atom arising from the fsa(2-) carboxylato group. The photophysical properties of the europium derivative investigated at both 300 and 80 K sustain a relative intense emission obtaine…
Adopting magnetocaloric heat pumping and refrigeration for electrical vehicle
2017
International audience; Refrigeration process is based on conventional gas compression and expansion techniques. However, this technique has numerous disadvantages since it generates greenhouse gas and is partly responsible for global warming. This paper exposes analternative method: magnetocaloric refrigeration that presents the advantage to combine high-energy efficiency and respect of theenvironment. Magnetic heat pumping and cooling is compared to conventional method applied on vehicle air conditioning system.Simulation results are used to demonstrate the approach.
Single-molecule magnet behavior and magnetocaloric effect in ferromagnetically coupled LnIII-NiII-NiII-LnIII (LnIII = DyIII and GdIII) linear complex…
2014
New types of linear tetranuclear LnIII-NiII-NiII-LnIII (LnIII = Dy (1), Gd (2)) complexes have been prepared using the multidentate ligand N,N′-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)-1,3-diaminobenzene, which has two sets of NO and OO′ coordination pockets that are able to selectively accommodate NiII and LnIII ions, respectively. The X-ray structure analysis reveals that the NiII ions are bridged by phenylenediimine groups forming a 12-membered metallacycle in the central body of the complex, whereas the LnIII ions are located at both sides of the metallacycle and linked to the NiII ions by diphenoxo bridging groups. Phenylenediimine and diphenoxo bridging groups transmit ferromagnetic exchange intera…
Field-induced slow magnetic relaxation and magnetocaloric effects in an oxalato-bridged gadolinium(iii)-based 2D MOF
2021
The coexistence of field-induced slow magnetic relaxation and moderately large magnetocaloric efficiency in the supra-Kelvin temperature region occurs in the 2D compound [GdIII2(ox)3(H2O)6]n·4nH2O (1), a feature that can be exploited in the proof-of-concept design of a new class of slow-relaxing magnetic materials for cryogenic magnetic refrigeration.
Holmium(III) Single-Ion Magnet for Cryomagnetic Refrigeration Based on an MRI Contrast Agent Derivative
2021
The coexistence of field-induced blockage of the magnetization and significant magnetocaloric effects in the low-temperature region occurs in a mononuclear holmium(III) diethylenetriamine-N,N,N′,N″,N″-pentaacetate complex, whose gadolinium(III) analogue is a commercial MRI contrast agent. Both properties make it a suitable candidate for cryogenic magnetic refrigeration, thus enlarging the variety of applications of this simple class of multifunctional molecular nanomagnets.
Layered gadolinium hydroxides for low-temperature magnetic cooling
2015
Layered gadolinium hydroxides have revealed to be excellent candidates for cryogenic magnetic refrigeration. These materials behave as pure 2D magnetic systems with a Heisenberg-Ising critical crossover, induced by dipolar interactions. This 2D character and the possibility offered by these materials to be delaminated open the possibility of rapid heat dissipation upon substrate deposition.
Fragmenting gadolinium: Mononuclear polyoxometalate-based magnetic coolers for ultra-low temperatures
2012
The polyoxometalate clusters with formula [Gd(W 5O 18) 2] 9- and [Gd(P 5W 30O 110)] 12- each carry a single magnetic ion of gadolinium, which is the most widespread element among magnetic refrigerant materials. In an adiabatic demagnetization, the lowest attainable temperature is limited by the presence of magnetic interactions that bring about magnetic order below a critical temperature. We demonstrate that this limitation can be overcome by chemically engineering the molecules in such a way to effectively screen all magnetic interactions, suggesting their use as ultra-low-temperature coolers. © 2012 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Electronic structure of the austenitic and martensitic state of magnetocaloric Ni-Mn-In Heusler alloy films
2013
Changes of the electronic and magnetic structure near the martensitic phase transition of Ni-Mn-In Heusler alloys doped with Co are investigated by experiment and theory. The nonstoichiometric Ni${}_{48}$Co${}_{5}$Mn${}_{35}$In${}_{12}$ epitaxial film undergoes a transition from a weakly magnetic martensitic phase below ${T}_{m}=350$ K to a ferromagnetic austenitic phase above ${T}_{m}$. Element-specific magnetic moments and the unoccupied density of states function is investigated using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. We find an antiparallel alignment of Mn and Ni/Co magnetic moments in both phases. The electronic structure is calculated using the SPR-KKR Green's function approach consi…
